I've Just Seen Shindlers List For The First Time!!!

Wow.....

This movie is probably one of the greatest films i've ever seen.

I was previously unaware of the World War and what actually happened and was recommended this film.

But boy was i shocked by what i saw, deeply moving and just fantastic and educational to watch.

First film i've cried since Titanic i think....when Shindler says at the end "I could of got 1 more....", that hit a nerve for me.

Hey, hey, people calm down a minute! You don't know how old the OP is. There was a time when none of us knew much about the Second World War. Just because all us old fogeys have known about it for years, doesn't preclude the fact that there is a whole younger generation that has yet to learn the details.

That's why films like Schindler's List need to exist. Those who know it need to teach those who don't. We should congratulate the OP for taking note of this film and learning something new about the old world.

It is a harrowing piece of cinema and the fact that it is all true just goes to remind us all what horrors humans are capable of. EVERYONE should watch this film. No-one should ever forget what happened there and then.

I thought it was overrated.

I've seen better things on the subject.

Actually, the best thing it provoked was a line in The Simpsons.

Monty Burns is making a film and has hired the Mexican non union equivalent of Stephen Spielberg (Signor Spielbergo). He's not happy with the result, complaining it doesn't show him in a good light, like Oscar Schindler.

Signor Speilbergo: "But Schindler is bueno, signor Burns is el diablo"

Burns: "Psshw, I'm just like Schindler, we both made shells for the Germans. But mine worked dammit."

Oh gosh...sorry...im the OP of this thread and said that so wrong...LOL

I meant to say...i was unaware of what was going on in both wars...like the details. I mean i knew that the germans killed the jews but didn't know the extent of it.

I can see where you lot were coming from though, you probably thought i was really stupid! LOL.

Nah im 19 and have never really learnt war in history in school which is ridiculous. The only things we learnt about was slavery, red indians..stuff like that.

Schindler's List is an excellent film. I always cry buckets, especially when it drifts into colour and the real life Schindler's Jews walk down the hillside and past his grave.

Have you seen "Saving Private Ryan?" If not, its a very good depiction of WW2 - especially the opening sequence depicting the Omaha Beach landing on D-Day. Frightening stuff. Its a fictional tale, though - as opposed to based on a real event like SL.

I'd also recommend watching the TV mini-series "Band of Brothers." Another great depiction of the war. It also gives a good showing of the reaction to the Allied soldiers when they first encountered the concentration camps. They didn't know the details until they came across them. This series was also based on true-to-life events. All the soldiers shown in it were real men.

Both SPR and BoB are heavily from the American perspective.

I've only seen the start of Saving Private Ryan. We had to watch it for our topic of shocking cinema and boy was i shocked. It definitely left a lasting effect on me.

I thought Saving Private Ryan was a much better film. I didn't rate Schindler's List at all. If people want to find out about the Holocaust then just look at the contemporary footage taken at the death camps. It's totally unnecessary, not to mention macabre, to make a Hollywood film about it with a bunch of actors prancing about in costume 'pretending' to be in Auschwitz. Ugh.

I think that if a film just showed exactly what happened then it would be far too harrowing to watch. Besides, it's still a film for the purposes of entertainment, not a documentary.

That was my problem with it, the 'entertainment' factor. I thought it was in extremely bad taste. Some things should be off limits to Hollywood.
