Ive just bought a bike and need to collect it on the weekend. but no tax.?

I bought a bike last night and it has MOT and i'm getting insurance today. But i was wondering if the bike log book thing wont be sent off till saturday, which means it wont be registered in my name yet, can i still get a tax disc without it being registered in my name and how quick can i get a insurance certificated through?
Its all a bit confusing ask more question if need help answering...
 
Hi Hazlette.
You can't tax it until your insurance is ratified and you have the letter to show, unless you do it online - so do it online. You won't need to prove ownership online to apply for a tax disc
If you need to use the bike meantime, then carry your receipt as proof of ownership and print off the tax confirmation form, on the off chance you have to explain to the police.
They will understand and just ask you to come by the station in the next 7 days to show it is all in place.

The V5C if dealt with properly by the instructions on it will leave you with the New Keeper Supplement (small green slip, part 10 of the form)
maybe you could look at one for another vehicle in your household.
The NKS will have your name and address details on it and you can then use this for up to 2 months to tax the bike.
In most respects it is your temporary V5C so that sorts that bit out.

Of course you need the MOT cert off the current owner.

Insurance - the Post Office is the only place on a Saturday where you can get the road tax and they will not process it without a valid insurance certificate showing the bikes details including the registration number. Said certificate has to be an original and not a photocopy. Get your insurers to post one to you as well as emailing a copy. If the copy is printed out on a normal home PC printer the Post office will not be able to tell it from one sent in the post so this is your back up if the post strike stops the real one arriving.

Once the bike purchase is complete leave the bike off road at the sellers and get whoever took you there to take you to the nearest PO that does tax - not all do so check that out on Direct.Gov before you go! To do this you need to make sure you complete in the am unless you know the PO you will use is open pm - not all are.

So that is the only way to do it. There have been several tales on here of people who bought new vehicles and drove/rode them just t get them home with no tax. There are too many ANPR cameras around now and that is why those askers got nicked and there wheels impounded -not worth the risk.
