I've got a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 and I can't get ac compressor to turn on?

As soon as you start charging the system, the low pressure switch will close and the compressor will cycle on and off until the refrigerant charge is sufficient to keep the switch closed - at which time the compressor will run steady.

Yes, you need professional equipment. You need a vacuum pump to draw out all the air from the system. There are 2 switches in the system that will not allow the compressor to run. One is low pressure, the other is high pressure. Once the system pressure builds to about 20-30 pounds, the compressor will come on. It will cycle off and on for awhile until the system is fully charged. If it does not start with pressure on the system, the compressor relay is bad.

I just put on another compressor but can't charge the system because the clutch will not engage. Do I need professional equipment to recharge an empty ac system?
