I've been trying to connect my laptop to my High def television for a while now,

please help!? I have an HP Pavilion Dv7 Notebook PC. It's a 17 inch. It has an HDMI port. Uhhh.. My TV, i don't know it's exact name but it's a 50 inch Plasma.. it also has an HDMI. If that helps i dunno. When i use my hdmi cable they connect fine, and when i turn on my laptop is see the windows loading bar (the green one) on the TV. So it works but then after the loading bar it stops working. Do i need to turn off my laptop display? If so, how? Please help! thanks
