I've been thinking of taking up a form of martial arts?

But I'm not sure what type to look into. My mom said she'd look into finding me a class if I can figure out more about it. She's talked to her boyfriend and like he was some pro military type guy and he says I should take a defensive form of martial arts because of my body type. I'm 15, 5'5, range from 110-120 and am bony as all get out! I'm not the strongest person but I really really want to take some form of martial arts, but I don't really know an extensive amount about it. Since I'd be a beginner what should I look into learning?
Oh and I really want one that stress's respect, responsibility, and inner peace. I don't want to just learn how to punch and kick.

I really want to look into learning a defensive form of martial arts and I have no prior knowledge on anything martial arts esque so what is a good form of defensive martial arts for complete beginners?
