itunes converting music from windows media trouble?

i used to use windows media player for music but i just got an ipod and when installing itunes it asked to automatically convert all mp3s to itunes and i did that but it only got to about a third of the way through before my computer shut itself off and stopped the process, how do i get the remaining songs on itunes?
 
i helped my sister when she got an ipod and didn't use itunes, just drag and drop like a flash drive. worked fine. itunes blows...
that said, the new ipods may not work the same way, but if you connect and can browse it and find the music folder, it should work this way still.
