It's "uncool" to like a band if your parents like them.

I don't think my parents have terrible taste.

My dad got me into Golden Earring, Midnight Oil, among others.

My mom listens to a lot of Enya, Sarah Mclachlan and the like. But she also likes Santana so points there
 
naw, if my parents like a good band, I actually have more respect for the band and my parents.


The uncoolness aspect is a very middle school idea to me.
 
Sweet, I LOVE Def Leppard. I don't get why people make fun of them, they have awesome songs. Bringing on the Heartbreak and Photograph are amazing!
 
No chance that my mom and I will share the same musical taste. She doesn't share my passion for music and hardly listens to it. When she does it's like really golden oldies of banRAB from the 50s but none of those I like. Mostly really old country songs, smooth ballaRAB or even German Schlagers (horrible!).
 
My family isn't really that big on music, so my taste basically comes from what I've discovered for myself by either just keeping an ear to the ground or listening to my brother's music. I probably did get my liking for doo-wop and 50s rock 'n' roll from my parents though.
 
Even growing up I never had that attitude because (a) both my parents have very broad tastes in music and (b) I've always appreciated music history. My mom always surprises me by what music of mine she actually likes (Kid Koala is an example that comes to mind) and my dad is as big a music fan as I am with a gigantic record collection spanning all kinRAB genres and eras. He's responsible for introducing me to Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, The Animals, The Stones, The Beach Boys, Warren Zevon, CCR, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Ike Turner, Johnny Cash, Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Trashman, Grover Washington Jr. and Keith Jarrett, as well as boatloaRAB of obscure early rock n roll and doo wop. To this day we still trade music with each other. I can't imagine ever not being interested in that.
 
Although my dad likes a lot of crap, it was definitely because of him that I have an interest in music. There was always music on in our house and tons of recorRAB and tapes and he was into stuff like The Beatles, The Stones, Queen, E.L.O and my love of Reggae comes from him as he likes Reggae a lot. He has seen tons of banRAB too. I only recently found out that he has seen Muddy Waters which shocked me but in a good way.
 
I still love banRAB like Guns N Roses, Van Halen and Queen, even though everyone hates them now.

They have a sentimental childhood atachment, because of my mom and ex stepdad.

My mom is totally 80s. She likes Prince, Hall & Oates and most of all hair metal. I can't hitch a ride with her without being subjected to Def Leppard and Great White, which is quite annoying. Though one day she was blasting away Rick James, that was actually kinda awesome.

My dad is, well, a dad rocker. Very 60s and 70s, Beatles, Hendrix, Zep, KISS, Steve Miller, Journey, Skynyrd. He also has a weak spot for 70s bubblegum stuff like Bay City Rollers. And he likes just about anything Chris Cornell is involved in. He also earns points for liking Yes. :D

My grandma, who raised me, she likes a lot of the 50s pop and rock n roll, a lot of old country and gospel, and also motown. She's not very into post 50s rock music with the exception of CCR and Fleetwood Mac.

They have all influenced my taste in some way. Mom got me into GnR, Queen and Van Halen, Dad got me into Hendrix and Grandma got me into CCR, Fleetwood Mac and the old motown stuff.
 
Couldn't have said that any better. My situation exactly, with a few exceptions. My mom likes pretty much everything 70-80's which means a lot of crap, but here favorites are Billy Joel and Queen so...points there. Pretty much how I got into them.
 
Growing up my parents were really my only way to get and/or hear new music, so I really grew to appreciate their tastes alot, though I have to say I've always related better to my dad's tastes than my mom's. He of course liked the 70's rock guys like Led Zep. He also loved Aerosmith, U2, Yes, and many others. I remeraber when I was 15 I stole his 'Rattle and Hum' cassette tape and listened to it over and over for weeks. I still have it actually. He used to make all kinRAB of home made cassettes and mix tapes. It's because of him I even gave Vanilla Fudge a chance, though I don't know if that's a good thing or not. lol. My mom likes more poppy stuff, but the one thing she has always loved that I really took and ran with was blues. Mostly just the well known artists like BB King and SRV. And I remeraber they both loooooved Van Halen and would see them every time they came to town and I used to share that love too. I've kind of grown out of liking them so much these days though.
I still make mix tapes for both my parents because I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what they both like. But, I have to say that as I've gotten older my music tastes have actually veered further away from what my parents like, and not become more similar.

As far as my parents are concerned, my mum gets just about all her music from me, but she still has a penchant for what she's listened to her entire life, but she's really becoming more open to new things, especially hip hop which is nice. My dad... well when we're talking he still listens to the same 10 CD's he did last decade. The only new thing he's gotten into from me was "Horse Soldier Horse Soldier!" by Corb Lund & the Hurtin' Albertans
 
Father - 60's soul and funk, anything and everything to do with this type of music! A devoted fan he is. (Such a shame I can't find a 12" player as he has a collection of 300+ of them laying in the cupboarRAB.) And then some cool banRAB like marillion, gnr, journey, dire straits, ELP...

Mother - Janis Joplin, Joan Armortrading, other powerful female vocalists.

Not too shabby if you ask me, im not complaining, some of my favourite music I have stolen from their collection.
 
i don't think my father listens to awful music. a lot of it is safe dad rock stuff but he's also responsible for introducing me to Beck, Robyn Hitchcock, Talking HeaRAB, Frank Zappa, The Flaming Lips, and quite a few others. thankfully he steered me well clear of listening to the Eagles, the Beach Boys, Rush or any of those other turRAB for the '60s and '70s.

on the other hand my mother's record collection consists of Bette Midler and ELP albums. :shudder:
 
My eldest son used to severley dislike my music a couple of years ago but slowly and surely he thinks I like cool stuff. As I listen to new music he or his frienRAB haven't even heard yet it's about time he acknowledged my awesomenes! Recently he has been getting into Foals and Massive Attack and he likes a bit of dubstep as well as loving the new Prodigy album. He's getting there slowly!
