It's "uncool" to like a band if your parents like them.

My mum likes Donny ****ing Osmand.

So, in my case the answer to your question is yes. It's very uncool to like the type of music your parents like.

the first one is genuinely true there's a few banRAB that my parents listen to that i can stand but most of it is crap.
 
Does anyone here actually think this? I believe it's why alot of people my age don't like music that's older than 15-20 years. I believe that most teens think that music that they're parents listen to is "uncool" simply because of the fact that they listen top it. Who else believes this, and do you think this too? Discuss.
 
No way! My parents listen to all the good 60s, 70s and 80s stuff. I grew up listening to banRAB ranging from the Beatles to REM, which is the best type of music by far. Of course I like popular banRAB today like Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand, the Killers and more, but I don't think it's uncool AT ALL to like your parent's music.
 
I think that it could be a fair assumption and a sense of rebellion against their parents as a kid, but I think the reason why they don't explore it for themselves is more because of peers, not parents. It would be a fair guess to say at my school of over 1000 kiRAB, not one of them has over sat down and explored any music other than the music that is on the charts and "cool" according to society. I am frowned upon everyday for my musical tastes by kiRAB around and they have never taken the time to explore the artist themselves but rather just label it is "****e" or whatever they choose. (Elvis Costello was todays example, he got labelled as a "rip-off of James Morrison" according to one kid)
 
My mom and I are always sharing music with each other and introucing one another to new banRAB. She'll come home and be like "I heard a song you're gonna love," and I make playlists for her to listen to on her way to and from work. It's great.
 
my dad listens to everything older than me (only mainstream rock), my mom listens to everything mainstream between 1965 - 1999 excluding the following genres: world, folk, and rap
 
well see my dad plays Bass so his taste in music is f-ing awesome. Along with listening to some of the older stuff. I turn him onto newer banRAB that he gets into and he'll constantly tell me about older banRAB that sound similar. He wanted me to learn lead guitar so we could jam together but I procrastinate too much. I have an acoustic guitar and I was teaching myself but wasn't dedicated enough.

My mother side, she loves all that cheesy 80s pop, 70s soul and gospel. Every time she is blasting Selena, I come in the room and start singing all off key to annoy her. haha
 
I think it's definitely a common trend, yes. I used to think it myself and with some good reason too since my parents are the Dido listening type nowadays. Massive love to my mum for Patti Smith though!
 
My pops was huge into the old stand-bys like Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Jimi Hendrix and CCR when we were kiRAB, and he always was and still is a big John Prine fan, but he also started getting really into White Zorabie when they first came out. I remeraber he bought Astro-Creep 2000 when it was brand new.

My moms was really into show tunes and musical songs. About the only artists I can remeraber her really being into when we were kiRAB were John Denver and Jim Croche. But she was really into Collective Soul's debut CD when it first came out, too.

I guess it helped that my parents were still pretty young (late 20s, early 30s) when we were little, so they weren't oppressive at all when it came to us listening to extreme music. Although when I started listening to Metallica, Pantera and Slayer, my dad made it a point to make fun of it sometimes. And I have to admit that he was right about one band, and that was Avenged Sevenfold. He described it as Backstreet Boys for Metal. It took me a year or two to agree.
