it's the world vs. the iPhone.

If you're not a lurker of the entire forum, I posted earlier today about how tired and bored of the iPhone I've become. I've been contemplating switching devices, and possibly even carriers. The only thing that is keeping me somewhat tied to AT&T is the fact that a possible "new iPhone" is in the works for this summer.

So, as of now, I've got the following devices in my head. Can anyone (with experience, preferably) write me down some good and healthy advice on which phone to switch to, if any?

I'll just create a poll with this thread.

really depends on what you need, dude.

I adore my droid and knew it was for me after just a small couple of test drives, as an iphone user since it launched.

reasons why (see my 5 reasons thread from a little while back - http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1592554)

-Real freedom backed by the OS designers with passion. this platform encourages all developers to advance the platform and abstains from bureacratic non-net-neutral control over developers who want to sell on the platform. the goal of android is to leverage open source to ensure the BEST innovations thrive with ease.

-Real multi-processes mobile computing backed by an insanely smart notification interface: for me immediate selling points were right out of the box to accomplish really cool things like google voice full integration and real constant IM that doesn't rely on proxy servers and clumsy push notification

-GOOGLE THOUGHT: free navigation, full backup, and all the fine details invested in the idea of simplifying and enhancing end users' ease of access to today's internet. chrome style browser lets you call up bookmarks just by typing in the address bar. google voice actually can notify you of SMS in real time. integrated contact system that supports merging and sync between different accounts if needed. the list is endless. google has the BACKBONE all thought out whereas apple has gone mad over the pretty facade and created a terrible single-process system that's only great in short bursts of immediate usability.

The last iPhone I had was the 3G. I decided to give it up because it lost its luster in my eyes. It's a good phone, but I think its major selling point is the apps, which don't really do it for me. And forget about AT&T altogether....

That being said, I'm very inclined to blackberries for their reliability and organization. I've had my curve for almost a year, which is longer than I bothered keeping the iPhone. The Storm and Tour were also good, but I'm too rough with my phones for those. I've also been growing on the android phones, but haven't had a chance to try them yet, but given the reviews, I'd take one of those over an iPhone too.

I've never been happier than I am now with my iPhone. A jailbroken iPhone makes the experience all that much more enjoyable. Looking forward to June to see if they improve upon the design and specs.

Still, I can't see myself looking at another, less mature platform at this point.

I finally played with the droid and was totally impressed more than i thought i would be. If you're gonna switch away from the iphone, android is the clear choice. Or maybe a black berry right behind.

If my iphone wasn't jb'd i'd be bored of it within a few months, too. I'd love to sit down with a droid for a week to see which one i like better. I've owned 2 motorola phones and both phones started to fall apart after about 8 months of use.

That's because JB is where its at for iPhone innovation. Apple took the first step, 2nd step was the community developed jailbroken SDK in 2007. From there the community has been innovating ahead of official Apple. Android has this mindset built in to its standard issue, relying on the community for coming up with new innovation and making sure it has access to all the tool and guidance it would need. Even when users root their device and do further modding, that's how android wants it to be is that they have that option and don't have to hack and figure out cracks to the Apple lock-down, all they have to do is modify the code how they want and make their own firmware.

i was in the same boat as you basically, i kept buying business phones with full keyboards (PPC6700, Treo 650, E71 etc) then decided that im bored with those phones even though they suited my needs and wanted to try something different

so i went with the i8510 which has a sweet 8mp camera 16gb memory, loud, high quality, stereo speakers, slow motion recording, and just basic numeric keypad...

the iphone has a nice big screen, lots of worthless (and some good) apps, and good storage space for all your stuff...

BUT it doesnt have a memory card slot, the camera sucks, speakerphone is horrible, no physical keypad/keyboard

What's the point in having a 8 mp camera on your phone if the problem will always be in the size of the lens, not how many mp's it has. Besides how many of us blow up poster size pictures taken with our phones anyways???? A 3mp camera is more then enough for a 4/6 shot, and it way too much for emailling pictures to your buddies.

After using full keyboards in the past, I can guarantee you that I type as fast and correct on my iPhone, as anyone on a full keyboard.

Hardly. A jailbroken iPhone is like having a whole new iPhone. Multi-tasking, hundreds more USEFUL applications, etc..

I wouldn't trade it for anything out there. Nothing can come close to the consistent interface used on the iPhone.

I got the Moto Droid a little while ago and LOVE it. It's an amazing phone and almost all of it's features work perfectly. The keyboard is great and my favorite things about this phone are the facts that the HTML browsing is EXCELLENT, just like on an actual PC, and the video playing is great too, amazing quality and never skips or anything. Loading times are great as well.

So far I can do basically everything on it that I was able to do on my old WinMo phone. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the Droid. Also, the Verizon network really comes through on it.

i started with the 3g, then when the 3gs came out i upgraded.
I've always been jailbroken from day one, however if this weren't the case, much like others said, I feel i would have tired of the device after a few months.
A friend has the Droid, and while it would definitely be my 2nd choice, it just doesn't hold a candle to my heavily modded iphone. Lockinfo, safari downloader, realsms, wifi tethering, etc etc etc.... Most of the shortcomings of the iphone have solutions through jailbreaking.

The biggest problem with the Droid is that it's only available on a shotty CDMA network. This means no simultaneous voice and data, and once you've had this feature, there is simply no going back.

Also, i'm not an 'app junkie' by any means, but the huge variety of apps in the store is a major plus. It means that there is always something new that you can try on the device. I am very familiar with the Android Market, have even released a few apps for the platform, and can confidently say that in its current state, the market is a joke. It might be fine for someone's first introduction to an app store, but anyone used to apple's store will find the market sorely, sorely lacking. Quick example: the best game they've got in the market? A tower defense game. It's cool, but any 1 of the 30+ tower defense games in the App Store beat it hands down.

Can I give the Droid any points over the iphone? Sure I can, there is one. The higher pixel display sure does look nice.

However with all this being said, i would much rather have google backing my device than apple. In my eyes, apple makes products like the macbook which are overpriced, and pretty. (Around here people don't spend $1900 on a macbook when you can get virtually the same thing in a sub $800 windows notebook.) And their stranglehold on the apps that flow into the app store will be a policy that we all look back and laugh about once open markets start taking off. Apple's like the Big Brother of app stores trying to protect me from myself. "I can assume the risk of downloading applications thank you very much apple".

Google makes products I've come to use daily, gmail, and continues to make ground-breaking products like google goggles and latitude. And they don't feel that they know more about what I want than I do.
Stick with your iPhone, for now.

I gotta say iphone 3gs, the apps! its all about the apps. I'm loving dragon dictation. If I were to be intrigued by something it would be the nexus one. That'll probably drop on AT&T or Tmob anyways. So hold your horses and get a pretty vinyl decal, it keeps the newness alive. Lol

Yeah, gee, other then Google Voice, Google Goggles, Navigator, Celeste (augmented reality for star gazers), B of A, and thousands more, yeah, there's NOTHING in the market!

Google Goggles:
the product looks to be a huge leap forward in the field of visual search, you point a camera at something and Google figures out what it is.

In a demo, Google VP of Engineering Vic Gundotra took a picture of a particular bottle of wine. When he ran it through Google Goggles, the result showed that the particular bottle has a hint of apricots. You also will be able to use Goggles to look up things such as CD covers and bar codes. For text, Google Goggles uses optical character recognition (OCR) to try and read things like logos and labels to aid the search.

Bottom line, most apps people use/need, Movie finders, Word/Doc viewers, stock market, etc. etc. can be found in the market already.

Many apps can be found, such as SnapTell (take a photo of the cover of any book, cd, dvd, or computer game and in seconds find out where online or in bricks/mortar store it's available, for lowest price), apps where you can take a photo of art, and instantly find out the artist and when it was painted... I could go on and on. ShopSavy and CompareShopper, two bar code readers which allow you to instantly compare the price of an item you're checking out in a bricks and mortar store with the price of the identical item, online AND within a 1 mile radius of you, even telling you if it's in stock! Does the iPhone do that? (It might, I really don't know)

Yeah, Android only has maybe TEN fart apps, and a few hundred sound boards, while Apple has thousands... really? How many do you need?

There are already GREAT apps (Navigator, Google Goggles, Google Voice) that are unavailable to iPhone users... and the way Google and other developers are pumping out apps, more to come!

Launch one of many internet radio apps, and while listening to a song you don't recognize, launch Shazam, and have it tell you the name of the song, and provide a link to purchase it instantly, from the Amazon store. Can an iPhone, not jail broker, do that?

What a silly, weak arguement, that the Android market "is a joke"...

Really shows you don't know WHAT you're talking about!

Both phones have strenghts and weaknesses....iPhone is frankly a better media player, due to it's iPod roots. But... to suggest that the Android market is a joke is ridiculous.

And the market has only been out for just over a year.
