Italian Job

I know most people aren't happy about this remake but from what I can see it does look pretty good.

The cast is amazing. You got Mark Wahlberg adn Edward Norton who are both excellent actors and the lovely Charlize Theron! The visuals also look cool! I heard when they previewed it in the US, the audience was clappping loaRAB especially in all the action scenes which are supposed to be really good.

Anyone else planning on going to see it?

Forget eyerything you know about the original film and you will enjoy the "remake".

Start to compare them and it's like chalk and cheese.

It's a shame they didn't have the nerve to call the new version something totally different and just make the odd reference to the Italian Job during the film.

I guess they felt the film couldn't hold its own and needed a family tie to drag the public in.

I did enjoy the film, had some nice lines.

It's a "check your brain out at the door" sort of film.

Mark Wahlberg got asked this on radio today, and he said this issue was discussed, and in the end it was a studio decision to stick with it.

I got the impression maybe that he personally woulda preferred it was called something else, he said to the interviewer somethin like "well, you'll have to take that up with the studio bosses"

Oh, I missed that interview.

Does sound like the suits eyeing the $'s by route of a remake.

It's a shame they didn't call the film something else but had a scene, discussing xxx and trying to think of a way to do yyy while in the back ground the Italian job is playing on the TV. Actor a turns to Actor b and says "I've got an idea" which leaRAB to the BMW ad .. I mean driving sequence ...

Homage is paid to the original without dumping so much expectation onto the new film (version is too strong for this film)

Done, dusted and a slick way of getting people talking about the film without being disappointed becuase the name means so much more to them.

i guess so Guy, this point was put to Mark W (about how the original film means a lot to Brits), he acknowledged yeah and he appreciates theres more pressure about the different level of expectations here,
but he also pointed out that its different in the States where the original doesnt have the same cult status as here and less well known, and said that a consequence of this new 'remake' is that it's stimulated renewed interest there in the original film.
He kinda basically said that hopefully people here will enjoy the new movie for itself. Or something like that.

I'm trying to remember what else there was in the interview....
oh yeah he was asked about stepping into Michael Caine's shoes, and he did an excellent impression of "Your only supposed to blow the bloody doors off ", accent 'n' all. :D

I thought the previews I have seen make the film look really good. Nowadays they are always remaking films so this one isn't any different. I found it a bit painful watching the original 'Italian Job' a couple of years ago. The best bit was the tune and the mini chase.

We are looking forward to seeing this film in its own right.

Well, I went to see it last night....

I think in its own right it is a good film, and its not like a remake... Its more like a homage film...

OK, so its not the best film... but it does have a good cast, has a lot of fun in the proceedings, and has some point backs to the original... One cast member watching it, and they even reference the final steal as "We're gonna do it like they do in the Italian Job"..

Its well known that Ed Norton didn't want to do this film, and in his performance you can see that...

All in all, its a popcorn shuvelling film... Nothing to expand your mind... But fun!

6/10 from me!

I think it was a good film. Im still trying to decide which was best though. The original was good because of the story line and the comedy value (like the bus on the cliff at the end), but the new one is good because it has all the hollywood SFX behind it.

One thing i thought was funny was when Marks caracter mentioned the film, something like "C'mon it'll be like the Itallian Job" :D

Im no expert on movies, but i think the ending was a bit poor, but i think that is a trait of Hollywood movies, all SFX and not a strong enough story line.

And also because of the original, you are really waiting for about an hour and a bit just to see the Mini's :D :D

you meant they didn't have the bus on the cliff at the end?

they may have well not had the minis, and called it something completely different.

Watched the "making of" doc the other day, and I have to admit it does look quite good. Well the new mini chase sequence looks quite good anyway, which is after all the point.

I don't know about the name. If they'd called it something different and done the same thing, then people would have just called it a cynical rip-off film anyway. Same if they tried to make it a sequel. The only real problem with the "remake" is that they set it in LA, so the name doesn't make a lot of sense, but then at the end of the day it's an American film targeted mostly at American audiences.

Regardless, it's can't be the worst remake to star Mark Wahlberg can it? It can't possibly be worse than "Planet of the Apes". :D

We went to see it yesterday. I wouldn't really call it a remake as such, it just stanRAB up as its own movie with similarities to the original film. We did enjoy it though.

Watched it last night on DVD (region 1 version out already) and I think I got what I expected. Good opening, middle bit was a little tedious waiting for them all to decide what they were going to do, and of course the Mini sequences at the end which everyone wanted to see.

Good to see good old fashion driving stuntwork instead of CGI. but my overall view of the film like other peoples is that it's the Mini's who are the true stars of this movie. Id give it 6/10.
