It would have been wiser to leave them in...

Really, it wasn't so bad. For me, they brought me in, shot up my mouth with novacane, put the little smurf nose on me and sleepy time I went.

Short of fracturing my jaw it wasn't all that invasive. My mouth hurt for a few days but I didn't even get the fun pain pills after the second day. From then on you just have to be real sure you clean out the now empty sockets and you're pretty much set.

Did it hurt? Yes. Was it unbearable? No.

I'm still scared to get my wisdom teeth pulled, but I know it only gets worse if you don't. I still don't trust anyone... they're all in it for the money. Plus they want your teeth, too. I'm going to eat mine.

I've had mine pulled, although they didn't put me to sleep during the procedure.

They just froze the fuck out of my mouth. It was frozen for the better part of 2 days.:happysad:

They put me on a low dosage of Vicodin when they pulled mine, and my brother has a video of a whole bunch of stupid shit that I don't remember doing. :ut-oh:

Because it's apparently bad for them. I can't smoke because of it. =(

Yeah, I just got one of mine removed today. I totally feel you, mag. They didn't put me out, and I'm glad. It was one of the most interesting experiences of my life. It definitely made my day. They gave me a lot of vicodin. I don't understand why they gave me vicodin, as most of the other guys I know that have gotten their teeth removed have only gotten motrin...oh well, I'm not complaining. =D

Because they can get horridly infected. Basically, if the socket gets dry you may get an infection in your actual jaw. It'll make a receding gum line seem like a good thing.

Someone asked is it inevitable.

No, many people keep their wisdom teeth. They really only need to be removed if they are crowding your other teeth or if they will cause jaw problem. Most people don't have room in the jaw for teeth this large and they'll push your other teeth together. That or they may prevent you from closing your jaw all the way. In some cases multiple sets will grow in under one another so you may have to have them removed multiple times.

But assuming they come in fine and don't create any problems, there is no reason to have them removed.

They only pull wisdom teeth if your dentist feels that to have them would push the rest of your teeth out of alignment and/or cause you discomfort. I know some people who still have theirs because their jaws are large enough that their wisdom teeth don't really push the rest of the teeth too much. I, on the other hand, have a small mouth. My dental appointments take twice as long as normal because my mouth is so much smaller, but that's irrelevant.

You don't have to get them pulled, it won't kill you if you don't, but a lot of dentists support getting them pulled because they're so far back, a lot of people have trouble reaching them with a toothbrush and floss, so they tend to get cavities. It's like having your foreskin removed-you don't have to have it removed, but it's recommended because your wisdom teeth, like foreskin, can harbor bacteria and viruses.

As for me....they knocked me the fuck out. They told me how to take care of my mouth while I was still coming out from under (they gave me Vicodin!) and all I remember was "Vicodin is addictive" so I didn't take it at first. Tip: Don't do that.

I recommend you DON'T eat or drink sugary products (especially pudding and gatorade)-they made the holes in my mouth hurt. Don't suck on straws either-the vacuum you create in your mouth when you do that can rip the stitches. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater a lot and heavily diluted Listerine several times a day to clean out the gaps as well, because you can't go near the back of your jaw with a toothbrush.

What was scary for me though was the guy who pulled my teeth...the whole time he was prepping me, his hand shook. He's an old guy and his hands were just shakin' away. Scared me shitless.

Getting your wisdom teeth taken out is supposedly the worst experience of your life but it was pretty easy for me. My wisdom teeth were pushing against my molers and my dentist made me come in 2 weeks later for the surgery. Instead of putting me to sleep they gave me laughing gas and some novacaine. I closed my eyes so I didn't have to see but it was ticklish. The after effects did hurt for a few days but the painkillers helped alot.

So in the end, Vichotin FTW!!! :D

Better to get your wisdom teeth out while you're young rather than waiting. Mine were impacted for a dozen years and finally cracked. It was hell getting those out.

I was told I would only ever have 2 wisdom teeth come through because my jaw wasn't big enough for all of them.

Now the other two are actually coming through, but very slowly, so who knows what's going to happen to them.

I was going to have braces but they told me I would have to have 4 teeth pulled and all the enamel scrapped off my teeth to make more space.

I'd perfer crooked teeth instead of no teeth.

Good luck with the pain, I've heard that it's bad.

It's only bad if you don't take pain killers. I had a month's worth of Vicodin so I wasn't feeling ANYTHING for about a month. It was great.

If they don't give you a pain killer, take a 600 mg ibuprofen every four hours or so. Ibuprofen's an anti-inflammatory, so it will keep you from looking like a chipmunk as well as taking away some pain.
