Same here. First time I heard it was in the mid 80's. It was on Saturday Night Live. It wasn't used in a racial context, but I thought the term sounded like it definitely could be used that way.

Again, I want to give him the benefit of the doubt...I guess the best I can say is, it was a really durab thing to say considering the political climate. It doesn't matter what a phrase or a term meant 60 years ago that counts. What matters is what it could be interpreted as today.

I'm sure I do. But if there are any that I used to use that could be misconstrued as being racist, I certainly would not, especially in the presence of none offensive alternatives, or just speaking plainly.

For example, I would never use the word "niggardly" when I could just as easily say "stingy" or "thrifty." Niggardly is a word that I did not hear until I was 26 years old, and upon hearing it and learning what it meant, it was obvious to me why no one used it.

However, I do think it is ridiculous that people would be offended by the use of the term Black Hole, or even Black Out, in terms of power outages.

Niggardly is a word that was made up to reinforce a racist concept. Tar baby was not. I put black hole and tar baby in the same category...concepts that are unrelated to race afaik.
