It is always a good idea to set your car's parking brake. Right or wrong?

My roommate and I disagree over this. She seems to think it's totally unncessary. I argue that it's good for the car, and prevents wear and tear on the gears. I do this all the time, even when I have my car parked on level ground. But especially if I'm parked on a hill or sloping terrain.
