I am having issues with my car and I was wondering if the world at large might be able to help shed some light on what could be causing the issue.
I have a 1998 Honda Civic LX sedan, 136K miles, auto transmission.
What happens is that I will start my car, go a little ways and all the sudden lose power. The car cranks right back up again no sweat, and it might do this one more time before it runs peachy again. Letting the car idle for about 5-10 minutes before driving it does seem to minimize the problem. The following circumstances appear to be constant when it occurs:
1) It's ususally on the warmer side (over 60). It doesn't do it when it's cold.
2) It tends to happen shortly after I start the car after it has been sitting awhile...especially if I don't let it run for a second and come off fast idle before putting it in gear.
3) Happens about the time the transmission changes gears, typically on decelleration. Although, it recently started doing this when accelerating as well ( I was going up a hill at the time)
4) Today, it was about 80 degrees, I left my car to sit for about 6 hours and when I started it up, it started fine, ran about 3 min and then died while I was letting it warm up and come off idle. It did this again 2 more times, then it ran fine and got me home no problem.
5) No issue with restarting it. My battery is old, but it's still throwing adequate voltage...I had it checked.
I had a code pull done, and nothing came up. The check engine light DOES NOT come on when the car dies. Tranny fluid was changed around 110K or so, belts, seals, and water pump were done at 105K as were new plugs. I also had to replace an oxygen sensor around that time as well, but that caused my check engine light to come on...which this issue does not. I do have a little lifter noise at higher speeds, but with a car that has 136K on it that's to be expected and has minimized since I switched to semi-synth oil.
Any input you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help!
