I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed 4x4 that 5th gear went out on. I recently went to a repair shop to get it checked out and they said it would have to be completely rebuild or a new one installed.
My question is what would be best? I am trying to go as inexpensive as possible but the closest specialty transmission places are at least an hour away. What is the price difference between the transmission I have being rebuilt or getting a new rebuilt one installed??
Another question is I was given some advice and told to make sure it was the exact same year and model transmission. Is this absolutely necessary? I know that some parts will fit in other models.
If its all about labor then assume that no labor will be charged. Just the cost of the transmission.
