Issue with T-Mobile!?

Ok so I had a contract with T-Mobile and it ended November 2010.
I went into the T-Mobile shop near me in october and asked about cancelling.
The guy said its ending in november so you don't need to cancel as it will end on its own.
which was fine! I went to get a new contract and didn't think about it again.

I looked at my account online this month and saw a payment to T-Mobile to find that there was also one in Jan and Dec. I phoned them up and they said you should have cancelled because if you don't tell us we put you on a temporary rolling contract which costs the same as whatever contract you already had. I argued and they basically said that there's nothing I can do about it!

Is this for real, is there no way I can get my £75 back?
