isn't this somewhat illegal?

I can understand the frustration of the OP. I am not deaf but what I did when I first began using the BB (and periodically when I didn't feel like using the phone) was get the minutes and data then turn around and removed the minutes. I would get one bill pro-rated (the minutes and data still on that bill). Next bill would be for the data only. If this doesn't work for the OP, I would STRONGLY suggest the SideKick. The new LX (if u want to fork out $400 for it) can be set up with the SK data only (I have used this on my SK3). If money is an issue, save yourself $200 and check out the ID (my choice when I use my upgrade soon).

Their aren't many companies that would cater to people with disabilities like this and at least T-Mobile does give you the choice to not have to spend more for something you don't even use. That is what the data only plans are made for. I am pretty sure the reason that the data plan is more is because when you have a voice and data plan, you are probably going to use them about equally. When you only have a data plan, you are going to use that 100% of the time so therefore it costs T-Mobile more and so it should cost the consumer more. I believe the difference is only $10. So you are spending $10 more, but it is cheaper than being required to have both a data plan and voice plan (minimum price of about $60)

I dont think its discrimination, its just buisness.

Im sure if your carrier see the market is hungry enough for a "special plan" i'm sure they will make one.

I can agree with you to some point, yes the voice dialing is a waste for you, but thats really what phones are about.
But I can understand your frustration, don't get me wrong.
If they where to offer something special, I would hope they make it avalible for everybody.. say if they where to offer just the BB data plan without the voice dialing for 10$ a month.. I'm sure many "regular users" want that aswell.

Btw, 55$, isnt that a bit high for a BB unlimited data plan?

Last I checked the t-mobile plan that was either pay as you go for voice or the voice feature was barred was 39.99 for any person who wanted the plan. No where did it say hearing impaired plan only. There are a lot of people who only use bb for data and have a data only plan which saves them money. Just think of it this way. Your saving money by not having to get a voice plan (cheapest is 39.99) then adding the bb add on (29.99) then unlimited messaging (14.99). Add that up then compare it to what you pay.

I dont think you were rude at all. I work for tmobile..and honestly you have a good point...i really dont know why they would charge someone who has disabilites like that more... i do know that handicapped or not...everyone will pay that if they dont want the voice plan...

Aha!

Now, once I switch to Sprint, can I get a TMo rep to offer me another 30% off for switching back from Sprint to T-Mobile?

Kidding aside, I bought a Sierra Wireless from Sprint a short while ago and it works fine!

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~there is a data only option for the bb and it is $30 with unlimted msg $15. $45 is extremly cheap for a data/msg plan. Vzm plan is a $40 add on it is easy to change I am a tmo rep pm me if you want help.

blackninja.... you made what is called a Red Herring. Ignorance aside, I completely agree that disabled persons should be able to get an affordable price for what they need and not have to pay for what they can't use. Perhaps writing our favorite civil servants would be the best solution?

I'd focus on making your own points and avoid tongue-and-cheek disrespectful comments towards myself or any other posters. Lets have it end with this rather than a valid thread with various points of view being respectfully shared be ruined by one person.

i am going to agree with blackninja as well here. His point was right on the nail and the first time i read it, it did not sound rude at all. Not trying to start a flame or be rude in any way. But i think its just a way for the provider to be fair to everyone.

I am also sure, if i went to tmobile's headquarters, there will be a parking spot for the disabled. Even an Equal Opportunity Employer.

ok I know that this is a bit of an old thread. I'm just here to clarify my situation a bit more and to correct my earlier comments.

Yes I've used the word "discriminate" and "illegal" too hasty. I was in the mood and was a bit confused about the reasoning so it can get a bit easy to use words stronger than I meant to.

I have a data only plan (BIS for $39.95?) and unlimited text ($15)(total about $55) NO voice plan.

Now the more i thought about the analogue of the one legged shoe shopper, the less it makes sense to me. the issue here is that the usability and "dividability" of the data plan means that whatever i don't uses will not go to waste. I'm simply not wasting $20 worth MB of data just by not using voice plan. if i get a voice plan, i could get it for $20 and have the BIS for $20, it would still cost me the same but hearing customers can use twice more functionality of their BB. so how do not having a voice plan cost me more for BIS which is essiental for IM, e-mail, and texting (basically the only way to communicate with most deafs my age) while hearing peoples can get BB with just a voice plan for half the price and are still able to keep as connected?

Please, no more analogues though (unless you could prove to me that I'm somehow wasting parts of the bandwidth by not bundling voice plan with the BIS).

For those of you suggesting Sidekick, please don't. I've been with the Pearl in the last month and now I'm a BB convert. Going to Sidekick from a BB would be like going from a spacey 2 bedroom apt to a plastic playhouse. I would just simply not be able to exercise as much freedom with customization and professional (meaning not so social-app focused) functionality with sidekick. (I'm not being a BB fanboy but since many of my deaf friends have sidekick, I know what the OS is like and for me, the BB just kick ***!)

Discuss!

P.S. Now I've figured out the setting to be notified of any replies to any thread that I've posted in or created, you should expect a more immediate responses from me from now on

To curiouswill:
I don't understand where you came up with the $35 price point. Did you mean the unlimited txt for $15 plus the $20 BIS add on? If so, that price is in addition to a voice plan (minimun $30-300 minutes w/ unlimited weekends), which all together costs $65. The other plan you're describing has NO VOICE MINUTES $15 unlimited txt with the $40 BIS stand alone plan which adds up to $55. So in reality, T-Mobile is not forcing you to get a voice plan and you're really saving $10 a month by not having minutes you can't use.

Huh $30 minimum voice plan? I thought that I remember the plan (at the time of the purchase) was $20. Let me look it up. Thanks.

P.S. I'm still waiting for info/proof on actually wasting more "bandwidth" by not having voice plan. As long as there is no confirmation of this, the doubled price of the BIS only plan is unfair for deaf peoples like me who want to use BB as far as I can see.

It's simple really. Tmo's primary goal is to provide a service for a said price that they hope will turn a profit (a business model). They are able to stay in business by their profit margin being higher than than their operating costs. Data is expensive across all carriers. T-Mobile got the genius idea to offer a fair chunk off the expensive price of data by offering it to the consumer at a discounted price if they have a voice plan. Their model is plain math. Data plan = $40, if user has a voice plan (cheapest offered being $30) plus half off data price ($20) = $50. Minimum additional profit made by Tmo is $10 and possibly more (if it's a meatier voice plan). This simple model is used across the board in many businesses. If you've ever been to a sale where they say "Buy 1 Get Half Off 2nd Purchase". In order to get that half off you need to purchase something first.

I am glad to hear you feel different about how loosely you used "illegal" and "discrimination", but I still do not feel that they are doing anything wrong by not offering you the discounted price. They treat all their customers equally and IMO, they are the most fair and accommodating of the big four.
