It's interesting that you think that your personal experience can be translated into a general rule.

Maybe you can't pronounce the two words clear enough; or maybe you can't get that they are just joking.

If you are a teacher and that's the smarter question you can post here, then your students are in serious trouble.
 
...LIAR and LAWYER? This is not a legal question. I teach English as a Second Language, and I've always found it interesting how Hispanics on intermediate and even in an advanced level, simply can't hear any difference in pronunciation between LIAR and LAWYER.

Are all LAWYERS LIARS?
 
I think its interesting that public funds go to illegals educating students who are violating the law. As for the legals ya its interesting.
 
I have a masters in TESOL and have taken enough pronunciation courses to understand why that happens in terms of the difference in vowel sounds between English and Spanish.

It really has nothing Freudian about it, but simply phonetic morphology
