Isn't it hypocritical for a Christian to join the military? Or at least to have an

MOS that requires killing? Of course there are some jobs (MOS) in the military that don't require you to kill anyone, but most do.
Plus there's the 6th commandment
 
Depends on the war.

In the US, soldiers take an oath to uphold & defend the constitution. So they don't have to obey an illegal order.

Defending the nation from external military threats and from internal, criminal acts are the only two valid functions of government. If a war goes beyond defense and becomes an imperialistic war (to gain territory), then a Christian has a valid basis to object. Otherwise, military service is valid, and killing enemy combatants, though unfortunate indeed, is part of that valid service.
 
Read the Just War Theory by St. Augustine. Long document short, it basically says it's ok to go to war as long as the reasons are "just."

And defending your country isn't murder. In fact, God would probably be angry at you if you would let your fellow countrymen be killed by a hostile faction when you could have done something about it.
 
No. Because Christians always come up with an excuse for doing screwed up things.
How can you pray for god to help you kill or create chaos?
I can't wait to see all the wimsy responses from christians for this answer.
 
many christians believe in a thing called a justified war. there are many conditions required to make a war a 'just' war according to christians, but once it is so declared, is okay morally to fight on a certain side.
 
The argument is, the actual commandment is "Thou Shall Not Murder" which is different from killing. If someone is going to kill you, you are allowed to defend yourself. If someone is trying to destroy your country, you are allowed to defend it.
 
If one is going with the intent of killing, then it is absolutely un-Christian.

Jesus said to turn the other cheek.
 
Yes there is the 6th commandment. He meant that for killing somebody just to do it and such. Even God sent people to war, look at king David. He said in the Psalms, " You teach my hands to make war."

There is a time for it so no it is not hypocritical
 
It's a JOB, so no, it's not really a sin.

But if someone surrendered and you still shot him, then I suppose THAT'S the sin of it.
 
King David was a soldier, and was still chosen by God. King David was a man of war, and probably killed hundreds of people without mercy, yet God still chose him.
 
I think it would be. It's kind of of like how Christians are generally Republican and they support the death penalty. Religion is just full of hypocrites.
