So I’m listening to the Live From The MET broadcast this morning of Verdi’s Rigoletto and three times that audience, like love-struck rock star groupies, burst into enthusiastic applause before the two more famous arias and the popular quartet were even finished. Poor Gilda didn’t get to finish ‘caro nome’, the Duke didn’t get to finish ‘la donna’ and the ‘bella amore quartet? Of course not. The applause started before the last few words were finished. And of course the last few bars of each musical piece was drowned out by the applause.
Yes, it was a wonderful performance (other than the interruptions) but wouldn’t you think this seasoned NY audience would have a clue, a collective instinct, as to when to start applauding?
Perhaps the MET should cue them on the teleprompter?
Well, I've watched recorded versions of live performances of the opera and this isn't always the case.
