Is/was the garden of eden here on earth?

i think if adam and eve were cast out eden that would mean they were cast out and sent to earth.
but if it were on earth i would assume it was where what is now the sahara desert. doesnt it make sense that god would get rid of something he didnt want adam and eves children to experience...
