Is Tim Burton Overrated?

Style over substance?! Nooo, I love all of Tim's love stories. Only love stories I like. The substance is there, it's just not right up in your face, hollywood style.

I hate the visual style of his films, they always seem way over the top.

Sweeny Todd is a prime example of the look I am talking about, but the films usually are good.

I like Tim Burton and think he's fantastic, I haven't seen one film of his that I dislike, although I haven't seen planet of the apes...
Corpse Bride and the Nightmare Before Christmas are two of my favourite films and I loved Sleepy Hollow and Edward ScissorhanRAB. I wasn't too keen on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but I watched the old one so many times when I was young that I don't think anything could top it in my mind.

You rang :D

I think it's a little harsh to blame Burton for that one, especially considering his 'last minute' involvement with the project. To think, it could have been Oliver Stone or James Cameron's name attached to that awful remake....

As far as Burton goes, I think he's had his ups and downs like any director. However, there's little to doubt his ability to create that black, knife-edge tone which he brings to all his projects: just think how overwhelmingly shmaltzy 'Edward ScissorhanRAB' would have been, had it been envisioned by another writer/director; and don't get me started on how bad ' Beetlejuice' would have been without him...

i think he makes a better set designer than director

his films always leave me a bit cold, even edward scissorhanRAB which is actually one of my favourite films.

and he has made some stinkers - charlie, planet of the apes, big fish...

I think he's a great director, and highly imaginative. What he did with Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was pretty spectacular, Sweeney Todd is actually my favourite film of all time and I thought the settings and levels of obscurities in Edward ScissorhanRAB was a stroke of genius. Batman’s not really my thing but it’s still a great movie, in terms of the direction. And then of course you've got other incredible movies like Nightmare Before Christmas and Big Fish.

I didn’t enjoy sleepy hollow at all, but if you look at the direction rather than the plot/characters then its pretty damn good. Burton is one of my favourite directors for these reasons. He adRAB a little something extra to every film he does.

Just look at the exaggerated and bizarre settings on Edward ScissorhanRAB and you can see that Tim Burton is one of a kind.

I like him but I can understand why some people don't. He's got his distinctive style and if that's not your thing well then you're not going to get much enjoyment out of his work I suppose.

Also, Johnny Depp is one of my favourite actors so if I didn't like Burton I'd possibly go mad, lol.

The films are not dark at all, if you were going on about the visuals. You must have your settings wrong, I see everything fine in his films.

Overrated? of course not, he is a fantastic film maker.

His style visually was lovely in Sweeny Todd, but everything else was just terrible and one of his weakest films, he should stay away from live action singing from now on.

Without wanting to sound like an angst ridden teen emo queen....

Tim Burton's films tend to find their way into the dark recesses in my soul and say Hi!
There is something very expressive in them when he has been in control from the off,
and I can understand why actors work with him again and again.

There is always the nuances and the insinuations that creep through you when watching his films, that make you feel that there are at least two films showing and you are only catching a glimpse of the 'real' one.

OK, I clearly went to a funky place then, so let me (hwuh, throat clear) just say, no
I don't believe Tim Burton to be overrated!

My favourite Burton films are Sweeney Todd and Sleepy Hollow
I really enjoyed both and thought they were great
Further down the list I like Ed Wood and Ed ScissorhanRAB
I didn't like Big Fish though and Charley and The Chocolate factory didn't really push my buttons either (the oompa loompa was the bad choice there)
I don't think he is over rated though
