Is Tim Burton Overrated?

With "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" hitting the cinemas next week.I was just wondering what your thoughts on Tim Burton are?.

Do you think he is a good/great director people make him out to be or maybe you think that he is a hit & a miss.

Personally i've only seen a few Tim Burton films. "Batman" "Sleepy Hollow", "Edward ScissorhanRAB" & "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory".I enjoyed them.

I like a few of his films the thing that annoys me is why they always have to be so dark . I mean in a I cant see whats happening in the film type of thing.
So I think hes ok but not the best :):):)

I don't think he overrated. He is almost consistently sublime. In twenty years behind the camera, he has only had one duff film (damn, dirty ape). Whenever he teams up with Johnny Depp and Danny Elfman his movie are raised above the norm to wonderous feasts for the eyes, ears and imagination. He may not be a Scorsese, Wells, Kubrick or even Spielberg, but he is a master storyteller who gets lots bums in seat.

I quite like his stuff, but he's a bit hit and miss IMO. He's made a couple of stinkers - Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and he's made a few classics - Ed Wood, Big Fish, Edward ScissorhanRAB, and he's made some in between - Mars Attacks, Beetlejuice, Batman Returns, Planet of the Apes. So, IMO his stuff ranges from excellent to awful.

Hes a good director, but people thinks hes more original than he is.

He also neeRAB to stop using Johnny Depp in all his movies. Thats getting kinda annoying now.

It's so annoying when people say this. It's like saying "God, I wish Bono would stop making music with those other fellas, it's getting kind of annoying now"

Depp and Burton together is pure magic, I hope for many more collaborations.

I agree. I love Tim Burton, i think he's fantastic. His films are always visually stunning. Personal favourites of his are Sweeney Todd, Nightmare Before Christmas and Sleepy Hollow. He creates such an eerie, creepy atmosphere in all of his films and you can really tell when you're watching a Burton film - just from the opening sequence. :p

I don't think he's overrated because out of all the fims he's done there are a handful that are great films.

I think that Hollywood need more directors who have an individual style. IF he wasn't doing that then there'd be less and Hollywood would be that little bit duller as a consequence.
I think that his quirky artistic visions add a lot to Hollwood's cinematographic lanRABcape.

Maybe not all of his films are great, but I think he's done enough very good films to be worthy of being rated highly.

Most very good directors don't make outstanding films all of the time, so I think Tim Burton's body of work compares very favourably to the work of his film making peers.
He may be seen as hit and miss, but I think that his hits more than make up for any misses he may have had.

The only director who I can think of who was consistently excellent was Sergio Leone.

He's made some great films. I really enjoyed Edward ScissorhanRAB, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Batman, Beetlejuice and even Mars Attacks. That said I didn't like The Nightmare Before Christmas (I know he didn't direct it but he did write and produce it), Planet Of The Apes or Corpse Bride.

I think he's a bit hit and miss TBH (albeit with more hits than misses).

That duff film, I wonder how something that awful could ever have been made.

They say that the film cost $70 million, therefore it's a pity they only spent $1.99 on the script and continuity.

Beetlejuice, batman, charlie and the chocolate factory, sissorhanRAB some of the best films in thoses decades.

burton is not afraid to go "dark" on films, personally if its a tim burton film i will watch it no matter how good the reviews are.

batman (1989) is probably the best film hes done, he took away the comedy of adam wests batman and made it like the comic book

Burton is great... I enjoyed all his films, don't think he's overrated... I love his style, its so much different from anyone elses and his partnership with Elfman and Depp is pure gold...

Aslong as he makes movies I'll go watch them... He's a great director, though I know that not everyone likes him...

Sleepy Hollow is one of my favourite movies, just so atmospheric. He has a distinctive style, and its good to see that he is not afraid to express it.

Not overrated imo.

I absolutely love Tim Burtons visual style, absolutely magical.

I think as a storyteller though he falters a little, I can't think of any of his films which I could say were....perfect, although he comes so, so close

I think some of the scenes he has shot are like beautiful little, self-contained snowglobes

The one that sums this 'snowglobe' style up most is when the Cobblepots are pushing baby Penguin through the snowy park at the beginning of Batman Returns...just beautiful

I hope and pray he will just grab me one day with his magnum opus, which I don't yet think he has made...

Just found out that Tim Burton is the subject of The South Bank Show in about 30 minutes from now at 10.40pm on ITV.

I thought I may as well post that seeing as it's relevant to this thread.

:)

Agreed. Burton is a very frustrating director for me. I alsolutely love the whole 'gothic fairytale' thing, and there's no doubt his films are visually stunning, BUT I think (unfortunately) a lot of the time his movies are more style over substance.

I want to love them, but most of them fall short in some way. I have enjoyed most of his movies (Edward ScissorhanRAB is my favourite), but I'm still waiting for him to create a true classic. I actually think his most recent films are less good (Didn't enjoy C&TCF or POTA at all, and I don't think 'Big Fish' worked all that well either. 'Corpse Bride' was just ok), but I haven't seen the new one yet.
