Is this possible without $20 data plan?

Not trying to get anything for free. Just lost my job and trying to save money but still stay in touch while I look for a new job. My old employer is letting me keep my older (no wifi/hotspot capability) T-Mobile Blackberry device, but I have to get my own plan. Under the employers plan it had voice and BES email, as well as my own pop3 email so those service books are on the device.

I need:
1. voice and
2. some, even if cumbersome, way to check my pop3 email.
If I could read some news on the BB that would be nice but not needed.

I have no need for texting, IM'ing, MMS'ing, SMSing, blackberry messengering, PIN'ing and all that other stuff that I am not even sure what it is. I don't even need "push" on the email. I have no problem manually checking, or "pulling" my email. I have spent 2 + hours reading about this and am still not quite sure what the least expensive plan would be.

Can someone please tell me if I have properly understood my options:

1. Blackberry Feature Enabler. Would this give me access to Tzones? If so, could I forward my pop3 email to a gmail account, and read my gmail via the gmail wap through tzones?

2. If BFE does not give wap tzones on a BB, can I get t-zones for $5.99? If so, could I then forward the pop3 to a gmail account and read my gmail via gmail wap through Tzones?

3. If neither of the above work, do I get a 9.99 unlimited email plan and then I get push email from my pop 3, but no ability to read the online news as I would with 1 & 2 above because I would not have access to WAP?

This is really confusing to me as I don't do texting and all that stuff. Just email and voice with a bit of online newspaper reading.

I hope someone can clarify. Thanks.
