Asthma's been out of whack the past 2 weeks. Went to docs Monday and they gave me a Z-pack and Medrol pack. Told me to also continue doing Albuterol in nebulizer 3 x's a day and continue my daily meRAB (Syrabicort, Nasonex, Zyrtec & Aciphex). Then Wednesday I had a really bad attack where not only my upper chest was tight and constricted, causing wheezing, but my sides near my belly button started squeezing like crazy with the pain shooting up my back. (It felt kind of like a charlie horse on top of regular asthma symptoms). Took Albuterol in nebulizer & Syrabicort afternoon puRAB. The pain & gasps subsided after a while. But I was very weak, tight and drained after that. Went to work the rest of the week, not totally with it. A few people told me my eyes looked glassy and I should have stayed home. I've taken so many sick days already, I didn't want to keep adding it up. But it's 5 days later and I'm still very sore, the SOB comes and goes. My sides and back are still sore as well and I still feel very weak and achy. I took my nebulizer with Albuterol and Pulmicort about 2 hours ago. Felt a little better and was up around the house. Now the chest tightness, lower abdomen aches and body weakness are all back.

Is this normal? Why am I not feeling better? I don't know what to do and I'm getting so frustrated being sick!! I just want to feel like myself again : ( Please help....

the zithromax you were prescribed is an antibiotic, it is prescribed to people who have an infection, it is not given as a treatment for asthma. do you have pneumonia or bronchitis? if you're taking the z-pack for an infection, you should get better soon.
this medication is prescribed for five days though it works for ten, so you should see results. the rest of the meRAB you are taking for the asthma should make you feel better.
if you do have an infection, it's only normal that you wouldn't feel well.

Hi- Hope you're feeling better today. Have you spoken with your doctor about how you've been feeling since your last visit? My pulmo doc usually gives me Z-Pack as a preventative antibiotic when I have a bad attack, but not quite bad enough to be hospitalized. He said it's better to do that than take a chance on contracting a respiratory infection on top of an asthma attack.

the z-pack, is not a preventative medication, it is an antibiotic that is used to kill bacteria, that's why it's prescribed for an infection. it can't work if there is no bacteria to kill, it is not used as a prevention medecine. it's wrong to use antibiotics for nothing.
what would your doctor prescribe if you really had an infection?
if you have a bad asthma attack, that you cannot control with your meRAB you will still
have to go to the hospital because the zithromax will not do anything for you.

There are many times when antibiotics are given prophylactically. The first one that comes to mind is for people with mitral valve prolapse before having any dental work done. And it's often done in situations as described above as well. I agree that antibiotics should not be taken lightly - I'm allergic to most and so I haven't had one in years. But i cna see when it would be warranted.
