Ok, I have what feels like nerve pain on one side and its mainly on my left buttocks. Does that sound like nerve pain? If so, what would it be stemming from and what should I do for it? Low back doesn't really hurt right now but I do have a torn shoulder on that same side. Not sure if that has anything to do with that or not. Thanks to all who can help!!

That isn't really is description of pain. Do you know what nerve pain feels like? Can you tell the difference between nerve pain and regular pain? I have tried to help you with this in two other threads that you have posted this question in,and I will try again. There is a distinct difference in pain between nerve pain and regular pain. Pain that is not controlled by regular pain meds and that is a deep burning, throbbing pain, pain that seems to ache so that you cannot find a comfortable way to sit to find relief, is usually nerve pain. It is caused by a compressed nerve or a nerve that has been damaged.

Damaged nerves can be determined by having a series of tests that can tell if a nerve is still active or if damage has occured. EMG is the name of the test that is admistered. They are not pleasant, but will show how badly damaged the nerves are.

Your damaged shoulder or neck has nothing to do with the fact that you are having pain in your buttocks. The area of your back that controls the nerves in your lower lumbar area is not the area that is directly connected to the upper area of your neck, nor is the high neck responsible for the lower back pain.

If you are still having issues, why don't you go into your GP and get a referral to either a good back doctor, or have your doctor get you into some PT to help release the pressure against your nerves that are being pinched. That might help relieve the pressure off of the nerves. Your other option is for meds that are designed specifically for nerve pain. They have found that meds that were designed for seizures work extremely well for nerve pain. The biggies are: Topomax, Neurontin, and the newest is Lyrica. They all have their side effects, so you need to consider that before you start taking them.

good luck.

Hi, and thanks for your reply. Ok, the pain that I am experiencing does sound like nerve pain. It burns and is tender to the touch and sitting isn't very comfortable right now. Do you know what part of the back goes down to the lower part of the body? I'm not sure where sciatica starts or finishes. this pain is off and on and right now it's on! What happens if a nerve is severly damaged? WHat is done about that? I wonder if massage therapy would help? How do the nerves get pinched?? Can it be from a position one sleeps in? I just don't know much on pinched nerves. My GP has wrongly diagnosed me a couple of times and we are getting ready to move so at this point, I won't be looking for a new GP here. Again, thanks for trying to help in explaining things!

The sciatic nerve originates in the lower back, goes down through each side of the butt, and continues down each leg into the feet. Pinched nerves can be caused by many things, ranging from...a herniated or bulging disc in the back, spinal stenosis, a vertebral slippage...but if you had any of these conditions, you would most likely feel some sort of low back pain in addition to the nerve pain. Another possibility is piriformis syndrome, which is basically an inflammation of the piriformis muscle (located in each butt). Because this muscle sits directly on top of the sciatic nerve in the butt, when it gets inflamed it can cause sciatic-like symptoms including burning, stabbing pain in the butt and down the associated leg. It's common in people that do lots of sitting...such as a desk job or driver. Hope that answers some of your questions.

When a nerve is severly damaged-which I have several that are, you end up with continual pain, and/or permanent numbness. Neither of which are something that you want. And I don't think that you are in this category. Mine are a result of a broken back from a disc repalcement surgery.

My guess is that you are having some lower back issues. Your Lower Lumbar area, for ease of discription I would tell you it would be from your waist down is the area that is giving you grief. And sciatica usually runs from your lower back down the butt, upper thigh, the down the back of your thigh to your knee. And Sciatica doesn't turn itself on and off. It usually stays on for a good length of time once it starts. So I don't think you have that-be thankful that you dont'!:) My guess is that you are just having some spasms. Irritating as they may be, be thankful that that's all that they are.

What can you do for them? I would try a couple of things. First try the heat patches that are out on the market. If you have to be up and about, try having those on. Then I would take Aleve. If you have it by prescription all the better. If not, take the OTC and take it round the clock for several days. Here's why. Your body needs a chance to heal. IF you don't take it round the clock you break the cycle that you've started and you don't allow your body the chance to heal and rest. By taking it 24/7 it gets a cycle going where it can rest and heal and get everything needed.

Good luck. I do think you would do with some PT.

Hi:
I have nerve-pain from waist-down, ... from my lower waist to upper thigh. Mostly, one side that is on the left side of my lower body while the right side is perfectly OK.

My neurologist dx'ed with Nerve-pain(I can't recall proper name for that).' For that I've been taking Skelaxin, Gabapentin/Neurotin and sometime 'Motrin 400 mg. ' per day.

According to my Neurologist, I have not nerve-pain but also arthritis that causing complicating pain. Without meds., I'm not able to do anything, even sitting on the chair and typing computer.

I suggest you to go to Neurologist for proper dx. and rx for your pain.
