Hi all,

I've been having chest tightness, constant (I mean all day long) throat clearing, cases of shortness of breath, and itchy feeling in my stomach and chest for about a month now. I also get pain in left corner of the chest. I took allergy medication because I had similiar symptoms few years ago and the doctors said it was allergy/asthma and that didn't really help. I've been taking tums whenever my stomach gets tight and that seems to help a bit.

Are these common symptoms of acid/reflux? How do people predict when the symptoms will flare up and how to cope/prevent it from coming?

I had all of those symptoms and started treatment with Protonix 2x a day a little over two weeks ago. I am breathing much better. It is so scary when something affects your breathing, isn't it? You should see an ENT and see if you can get a prescription for a PPI.

SounRAB more like LPR(laryngopharyngeal reflux, sp?) I have it. search LPR and it will tell you all about it.

Thanks for pointing me to that direction. Do you also get chest tightness? For me the most painful symptoms are the chest tightness and throat clearing.. although I have good days and bad days..

How are you coping with your symptoms? Do you know of any thing I should be trying other than trying to stay calm?

Poohgrl77,

I have severe GERD and my main symptoms/complaints are severe burning chest pain, severe chest tightness, breathing problems, and chest pain. I am also on asthma meRAB, and rabroadP meRAB....

Increasing my asthma meRAB did not help with the symptoms above. I have been taking Prevacid (1) daily and Carafate (4) times daily and that seems to have helped with the chest tightness. I still have good and bad days but not as many bad ones with the chest tightness.

I have also modified my diet - do not eat (3) hours before bed, sleep on an incline, etc.

I would suggest modifying your diet to remove chocolate, caffeine, citrus, tomatos, etc. and to try Prilosec OTC once daily for a few weeks and see if you see improvement. If the tums/rolaiRAB offer some relief - this would seem to indicate that the problem is in your stomach.

Best of luck and relief to you.

Vanessa

Thank you for your information. My doctor suggested that I try Prilosec OTC as well so I'll give that a try.

Yes I get the chest tightness. I was doing better but now I think I may have an ulcer or something, Im making an appointment with a gastro to get a scope done soon. I take prilosec, It doesnt seem to really work at all, IDK, I hope the doc can help me. Best of luck to you.
