Is this Asthma?

I have seen several doctors and pulmonologists about my symptoms and some of them diagnose me with asthma and some do not know what is wrong with me, maybe I can get some insight here.

My symptoms are:

chronic wheezing (I try my hardest to clear my mucus but it is impossible)

occasional shortness of breath (sometimes triggered by pet dander, cigarette smoke, etc... but never by exercise. I can run extremely long distances with no problem)

I feel as though my shortness of breath only exists because of the congestion in my chest.

I have tried Albuteral (sp), Advair, singulair and none of these offer me any noticeable relief.

I do not smoke and I am 25 yrs old, good physical shape.

I have had the above symptoms for a little over 10 yrs now and it may be getting progressively worse. It is hard to tell because I am able to tolerate it better now.

Does this sound like typical Asthma or possible alergies? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Does Albuterol provide you with any relief at all? Those corabinations of meRAB should do something.

Have you been tested for allergies? Have you taken any allergy meRAB?

Have you taken any acid reflux medications? Reflux can aggrevate the lungs as well. Often it is "silent" and you won't have any other symptoms.

Thank you for your reply!

Well I had to go into the Dr this past week because I was feeling really bad and it turns out I came down with Bronchitis. They have me taking my Albuteral 4x a day and it seems like it works for about 30 min or so. But overall my chest congestion today for example is almost non existent. I believe it has to do with the antibiotics and the corabination of Albuteral perhaps? I'm sure in about 2-3 weeks my weezing will return.

Allergy meRAB I have taken in the past are Claritin, Singulair, Zyertec, and Zyertec D. The only one that works for me is the Zyrtec D. When I say works I mean for nasal congestion and stuffy head/headaches, not so much for my chest. AZ is horrible on my allergies, I'm from CA and didn't have them until I moved here.

Never taken any acid reflux meRAB. That is an interesting thought, I will look closer into it.

Matt,
Glad you are doing better for now.

I find that the allergy med + nasal sprays help me a bunch. For me, it is Allegra (had to drop the "D" because I developed high blood pressure) with Flonase and Astelin. Astelin helps more with the environmental allergies. I also take Singulair to help with the asthma and the allergies.

If you research the possibility that you may have reflux, try using the keyword of "LPR" and asthma with reflux. You will find that it isn't uncommon for people to have reflux that affects the breathing. It can aggrevate the bronchea as well as the nerves. If you find that you do have reflux, there are some lifestyle changes that may help. If you go the prescription medication route, PPI's are often prescribed. For LPR, many people often find better success taking them twice a day.
