Is this an effective way to work out?

I know this sounds stupid, but I'm all about multi-tasking. I am a college student and I tend to read my novels in one hand and lift my dumbells in the other and routinely alternate between hands. Is this an effective way I feel like I am reading and understanding well and I feel like I am growing muscle, but does this really work or is it just overkill? I like the feeling of studying and working out at the same time.
