Is this a scam on Messenger or am I just ignorant to her culture?

I answered an instant message from someone I'd never met and became uncomfortable for fear of scams. I said from the beginning of the chat that I was not going to give out personal info because of this. She's from India and asked for my birthday and I asked why she wanted to know. I thought it was weird because I've never just started a conversation with someone and had them ask my birthday. I said so. She said I should know there are cultural differences and she took offense. After what I perceived as telling me off she asked if she could add me as a friend or would I find that offensive as well. Is it normal for Indians to tell their birthday to someone they just met? I've never had someone ask my birthday within five minutes of meeting much less ask to be friends after going off on me. What am I missing here?
