Is this a good story idea, or is it weird/boring?

So this just kind of popped into my head. Any opinions??

Nissi (main character) and her brother Liorion (secondary character) are both orphans, abandoned by their parents. Their parents were magical, with special abilities no one knew about. Both Nissi and Lirion have inherited a special power (unknown at the moment) and must keep it a secret. Somehow they run into Mo, another girl who has unique powers. Accidentally one of them shows their power in public to save someone or stop something dangerous. (unknown at the moment) Now all three are running from HRL (human research labs) so they wont be tested.

Is that a good idea, or no? Would it interest you??
 
Sounds a little like Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo (popular youth fiction at the moment). If you do write something of the sort, I would suggest not making the magical powers the focus of the series. Focus instead on character development and any political/ethical struggles occurring simultaneously in their world. Is there a reason both kids are orphans with magical powers? Some sort of magical spy work kill the parents? Is there a war. What is the source of the powers? Does that have anything to do with the political situation?
