Cumbria university.? There is nothing more beautiful than nature. The colours and smells of the flora, the ever-changing landscapes, the breathtaking views, but most of all the wild fauna, in the air, sea and on the land.
To be able to do the course ‘Wildlife and Media’ would help me start my journey of becoming a wildlife filmmaker, which for me would be exciting yet very challenging, with the opportunities to explore stunning places around the world and develop my skills of using media to capture the behaviour of a range of exotic and mysterious animals.
I have always been interested in filmmaking and photography. It can manipulate your mind in many ways; by making you laugh, making you cry, or even by leaving you fascinated by the creativity and skill of the person who captured it.
The thought of someone being inspired by my work excites and motivates me to want to pursue by ambition, which I know I can achieve.
Wildlife in media give people an insight into animals they may never have seen, or may never get to see in such a way, whether its in a different country or simply a nocturnal species that they have never been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of.
An aspect of the course which will work especially well for me is the fact that 90% of it is coursework. Coursework is my forte as I have developed my writing skills from studying ‘BTEC National Diploma in Animal Management’, which has also inspired me to enrol on an animal related course.
For me, studying any animal is fascinating, but studying a wild animal is even more of an enthralling experience. To capture a photograph or film of a wild animal would be a far bigger achievement for me than capturing the behaviour of a domesticated animal, as captive animals are less likely to run away from you.
As well as studying animal management, I have been doing media studies for ‘enrichment’, which takes place every Wednesday at college. This has broadened my knowledge of medial techniques that I think will help me to flourish on the course.
I have also helped raise money for Weirfield wildlife hospital, by collecting cans and money to donate to them and I am currently organising a fund raising project for orphaned Orangutans in Borneo, as I feel strongly about helping them as they are such amazing animals that the thought of them becoming extinct really saddens me.
In my spare time I enjoy walking and camping. It allows you to connect with nature and be free from life’s daily problems. I love being creative, by drawing, painting and playing my piano in which I have recently achieved grade one and I am currently studying grade two.
Being with my family, friends and animals is a big part of my life, however I am looking forward to moving away from home and living at the university, as it will give me independence and a chance to meet new people.
I look forward to the challenges university will bring, as it will be a huge privilege to study in such an idyllic place on an exciting course, which could never fail to impress me.
