The Scarlet letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne has been one of the most influential novels of American literature. Not only because of its controversial theme and strong symbolism. Or even how Hawthorne portrays the puritan ways of seventeenth century Boston, but also by the role women play in his story. Particularly the main character Hester Prynne. A woman who is forced to were the scarlet letter “A” on her chest, so that every one who see’s her may know of her sin. She is forced to stand on a scaffold so that the pious towns people may look upon her as the ultimate example of sin. At first one might think she is a victim of the self righteous , but as the story goes on we find out that Hester Prynne is the savior not the victim. She is the heroine of the story, And perhaps one of the first heroines of American literature
