Is this a good deal for the sale on these Bell Receivers

Workforbell,

In my case, I was planning on purchasing the PVR @ 50% off and renting 4 - 4100's. Does this mean that I'm looking at an install bill of $200 for the rentals (since the PVR install is free)? This seems unreasonable, since all of the outlets exist, and are individually wired to a central location.

However, if it includes the required multi-switches (2 SW-44's I presume) then it doesn't seem quite so bad.

I am quite comfortable connecting the receivers myself - in fact I can install the dish as well.

What would you suggest I do to keep the costs down?

Jeff if you bought first then rented you would pay the $200 plus the multiswitch. So rent the 4 boxes first, get the switches and install free, (save aprox. $280 there), then get your programming package half price for the first 6 months, ($150 saving, for a total saving of $430) then buy the 9200 and add it to your account.

Bell has not gone to MPEG4 yet. I believe *C has a receiver that accepts mpeg4 for over a year now.

Hi, A question about the need for a telephone hook up to the receiver. I am thinking about purchasing the Bell HD PVR with the new deal(never had satellite before) but I have no telephone access in that room. I probably would never order pay per view. The Bell salesperson told me I need to have the telephone connection for updating software/firmware on the PVR ???? I don't want to spend a $100 for a wireless plug connection or add an extra phone line in that room. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

Do the math, $15 on a 4100/4120, $45 on a 6120/5902, $90 on a 9220, all 15% mark up., (yes Bell loses lots of money of the hardware)

95%+ is pretty spot on, think of it this way, Bell get 2000-5000 new customers a week, (224,000 last year alone), plus moves, (about 5% move each year, or 90,000). So just moves and new installs are 1006 a day on a 6 day schedual, (I won't even add the service calls). 50 complaints a day about moves and installs is 5% a day, or 300 a week.

I do believe these numbers.

right now when you move they will also do a free basic (one receiver) installation at your new address, you need to take the sw44 and lnbs, but you can leave the dish.

I'm not on the front line of HD. I am hoping to maybe get one at the future shop sale next Christmas.

So... will live with my reg-PVR half price for now.

By this time next year, MPEG 4 will be out hopefully and I can make a decision based on the policies at that time. You can never ever keep up with technology unless you're willing to throw away a lot of money.

My thoughts are the Bell is not going to tick off a bunch of their most important (high paying) customers by gouging them for the upgrade. I believe the chats about the "swap".

It would be nice if they had a 2 step upgrade (but I'm dreaming here - dreaming that this will get back to Bell as a good idea).

If you have a 6100/9200 - upgrade to non pvr/pvr mpeg 4 receiver for X (hopefully free or less than $50)
Any other receiver - upgrade to a HD non pvr / pvr mpeg 4 receiver for $150-200. Must give back your old receiver.

They get the benefit of getting people to upgrade to the new receivers, they get the benefit of more people upgrading their TV's and more people ordering HD channels.

My install is towmorrow.

They are contracting a guy from our nearest city (Brandon, MB), 1 hour away.

The guy said the installer would call to confirm that he was coming.

Its 4 pm CST, If I don't get a call by 7pm I am calling BEV again. I have to take a day off work for this install and don't want to be stood up by an installer.

This is great, I am not sure if my receiver will be switched over to MPEG4!!

Ok canada45 thanks for the input. I will goto Home Hardware, BUT! I will have order it in. I will probably end up paying them $549 or something like that.

How do I get the half price deal that way!!?? When my receiver is installed and the installer calls in to activiate it will he setup my account with the credit?

I really need to know this.

Now that I think about it Local is better as when I used to have SC 3 years ago with a hell of a lot of problems I went straight to SC, when I went to return the damn thing the guy at the Source said, you don't go to SC if you have problems , you come straight to me!!

Anyways I think it makes more sense locally, makes install setup easier, I will order it in local and everything IF I can find out how the credit works if I pay the full price to my dealer, is it added to my account?

I have a feeling I am going to be in CSR and Supervisor please, mode in the next few weeks....

If that camera is curently hooked up through the rf line going to that tv, there is no reason you can't do exactly the same thing.
The TV2 RF output has a choice of chanel for it's modulator.
TV2 CAN operate totally independently of TV1 and has composite or s-vid and audio, all analog.

actually, it is more likely the opposite...many independant dealers simply don't want to sell BEV...the main reason is the restrictions and control over the hardware that BEV has to help prevent fraud...the pre-registration systems that make sure purchased hardware is activated on legitimate accounts...it's a bit of extra work, and many dealers didn't want to do it, so their account status was stripped...BEV has these rules in place to try and minimize fraud with their service, and its no surprise that "some" of these dealers were part of the problem.

Any body out there know where I can get a second 9200, no dish needed for, a good price ??

Many people don't have their receivers connected to phone lines so it's not an absolute requirement despite what Bell says. Your receiver will update itself via the satellite, not the phone line, so that's incorrect. You may get a call from Bell at some point to verify all your receivers are at one residence to ensure you're not account splitting...that's the real reason they want the receiver connected to a phone line.

* Choice recievers have a slot that can accept and new board that makes the reciever MPEG4. They will go 8PSK first which can increase their bandwidith (cheaper) first and then go MPEG4 many months later. Bell will always have more HD, that is why I may come onboard sooner than later. * Choices advantage is their 505`s and 530`s can accept MPEG4 with the additional board which is designed to be installed by the customer, so no swap out of the total box. But it may take them eions to ge there!!:(

Ok. I am an existing customer of Expressvu with the std. def. package, wanting to move to HD with the 9200 PVR. This deal in this thread makes it an attractive move, but as mentioned above, is only available to new subscribers. Without getting into the debate as to why Bell won't recognize the value of maintaining existing customers, I am trying to take advantage of the deal. Our current contract expires in January, and is in my wife's name, which is different than my last name.

What I would like to do is sign up as a new subscriber to Bell ExpressVu,
and get the HD PVR package. I would also like to cancel the contract (the one in my wife's name) as soon as the 2 year deadline is over and the $200 fine is waived.

If I am starting out as a new subscriber, I am assuming that they will send
someone to the house to install the equipment. They'll find that I already
have a dish installed. Can they just add the LMB and leave the remainder of
the hardware in its box? I just don't want them to install a 2nd dish and
more cabling...

So, my plan is basically to double-pay for the month of December, then have
the old contract closed off in January.

Will this work? I've spoken to someone at a BellWorld that said I have to cancel my existing contract first before signing up for the new one. Once its cancelled, I can order the HD pkg and set my activation date for the next day or so...

The installer didn't even plug my recievers into the wall. As well, if you ever need to do some trouble shooting with your machine they will send a signal to ask the reciever to call home to give a status update. The phone chord they give you is quite long, so if you ever did have to plug it in temporarily, if your lucky it would connect to a neighbouring room.

When I skimmed over my contract, in the fine print it said something to the effect of under certain circumstances you may get special permission from bell not to have it plugged in. Whether you can get that or not is another question, but I know lots of people that don't have it plugged in.

Freaking out now... I decided to get the 9200 and have it on 2 TV's. One HD and one SD. When will I ever have 2 shows on at the same time...

So anyways with the 2 TV mode, will I be able to watch TV on HD and TV on the SD at the same time? (sure hope so). Will it have 2 guides and 2 iTV capabilties at the same time for both TV's.

Biggie: If I record a SD show on my reg. TV and goto my HD tv will it be available to play there to? That would be awesome.

Now install question:

This guy is going to have 2 drill me 2 lines in my basement and another line from the 9200 up through the ceiling to my living room. Is that all included? Its all part of the 9200 install. will they charge me for drilling new lines in? I have enough cable cords so thats fine.

now my rant on Future Shop:

FS hates Bell. I called to make sure they have the 9200 in stock when I go towmorrow and they said things like.

It will cost you $240 more over the 2 year contract (probably thinking of all-in-one there) over SC.

then the person tells me if anything goes wrong with your receiver don't excpect any service from "awful" Bell.

This person was bashing BEV so badly. I had to get a bit crusty and say:

"I have made my descsion to go with BEV and the 9200, I am NOT going to SC, tell me if the 9200 is in stock, please"

Wow they really dislike BEV, might goto Visions instead to buy BEV receiver instead of FS. But still buy the tv at FS.

I was really shocked by the bashing though...

So your obviously a current customer:

BEV - $599

or look on ebay, Dishnetwork ones should work too.

You may need a new dish if you currently don't have Variety3 or HD programming.

BTW why does Bell do these with there dishes. Why don't they have all of their dish enabled for both satellites in space. It would make it easier for people to sub to more programming...
