Is Third-Party Backup Program the Answer?

Greetings,

It seems I?m not very PDA literate ... so please bear with me. I haven?t hot-synced my Palm Tungsten E since June 2005 though I?ve been using this PDA almost daily since then.

Back then I noticed my hot-synch transfers weren?t all that successful where some data didn?t get copied to my hard drive. So I stopped hot-synching. Since then I?ve heard forum accounts of other users losing all or part of their Palm-based data when trying to hot-synch.

Meanwhile I?ve accumulated a l-o-t of Memos on my Tungsten E ? not to mention Tasks, Contacts, and Calendar stuff ? that I can?t afford to lose.

I?m wondering if a third-party backup program is the way to go here but I?m totally in the dark here. What do they actually do? How do they work? Which is best? My ultimate goal is to get all my data from the PDA into MS Word on my computer.

Any suggestions will be most welcomed?

Mike Mooney

PS - by the way, when I first got the Tungsten E, I also got a SanDisk SD 512MB expansion card though I haven?t really used it yet. Again, I?m a newbie to much of this.

You have Tungsten E NOW, right? 2 recommendations:
jkware's "CardBackup"
http://www.jkware.com/

TealPoint's "TealBackup"
www.tealpoint.com

If you had a T5 or Tx, I'd recommend only TealBackup; CardBackup will work fine on your Te. I use both on my T3 - CardBackup for all files not "private," and TealBackup for private files I want encrypted. It's no good using TealLock or other encryption device if the backup isn't encrypted. If encryption isn't important and you want only one program, CardBackup is VERY fast, programmable for multiple backups (I have 2 each for CardBackup and TealBackup) - and very dependable if you ever need to restore.

TealBackup is very good if you're running system hacks of any kind - prompts you to turn them OFF before restore. Both are excellent and I recommend getting both - but if "one" is all you want and you DON'T have a T5/TX, then CardBackup would do you nicely.
