Is there such thing as a pre-engagement?

I was just wondering because i have heard of people making promises to their loved ones that wasnt an engagement but it was a pre-engagement.

promise rings tend to be considered pre-engagement. cause they generally mean i will marry you someday, or i promise to be faithful to you untill we take the next step.
