Is there such a thing as a computer that you plug into engine & does a

complete diagnostic of a car? 20 yrs ago i remember my pops did a diagnostic on his car at a repair shop & they plugged all kinds of wires to his engine & the computer printed a 20 page report of his car.
I have not seen that kind of computer diagnotic anymore..
Do they still exist?
I ask because when i take my car in the shop & ask for a diagnostic they just do a visual..
