Is there really sexual assault in the military against women?

I've heard from different people on this, but aparently there is a HUGE number of military-women within the U.S. military who are sexually assaulted or raped within the military, I've heard from 1-in-3 to 1-in-10, I mean I know any form of sexual assault is a problem, but is it a big problematic problem. My question is, are the numbers really high in the military as others have said, and what can one do to stop/reduce this from happening any further?

I have served for 14 years on active duty and have heard of some rapes involving military personnel I never knew a person either accused of it or accusing someone of it. I do know a number of people in the civilian world that were raped.

If asked I would say the circumstances of rape in the military are similar to the civilian side.

noooooo the bitches just like to complain that the men shocked their cocks in the pussies. or they touched their asses. its all lies!!!!!!!!!! come on man? seriously. you cant stop the fucking harrassment. as long as men and women work together some bitch is gonna get rapped. rather its men men women women women men or men woman. fuck man just google the fuckin shit.

One case is too high...but realistically it is about the same as it is on a college campus.

Sexual assault can vary from inappropriate touch to rape. There are also rape/murders in the military. It is sad and tragic that women are assaulted by the men they is supposed to trust. It is just as sad that men are victims too and that is seldom acknowleged.

I was in the military and was a Navy Corpsman. Because of my job I knew about a lot of the cases because women would come to medical for an exam. So I got to see some of it right after it happened.

Some of the efforts to stop/prevent it from happening is education. It is important to make people awair of the problem and not to tolerate it at all. Let both men and women know how to protect themselves. (Men can be victims of sexual assult too.) Also let them know how to report it.

You have to have support from the chain of command. Any reports of sexual assult have to be taken seriously and investigated fairly.

Too often one of two things happen during an investigation:
1. The command doesn't want to look bad so they transfer either the person making the complaint or the accused and sweep it under the rug. They sometimes don't believe or blame the vitim and make it hard to get something done.

2. They sometimes believe the victim and punish the accused even with poor evidence. They want to make an example...sometimes even when the accused may not be given a fair chance.

Often the sexual assults are a he said she said. People take sides and it can be very ugly. Men are often afraid of being falsely accused and ruining their carreers...Women are often afraid of not being believed and being victimized again by the process.

Both fears are real. Some men are wrongfully accused. Some women are victimized for reporting it and given a hard time.

It is a bad problem and what makes it worse is people really don't like to talk about it. It is like ignoring the elephant in the room. It does happen. Then agian it is also a problem in our society. The military is not that far removed. Colleges and Universities have the same problem.

As far as stitisitics go I really don't know. A lot of it goes unreported for reasons mentioned above. And I don't know if you mean how often is a woman touched (pinched butt) or do you mean raped? Of course rape is more rare...but there is a lot of lesser assults happening a lot.

The catch word for Sexual Assults/Harassment is Military Sexual Trauma.

One source gave a sististic of 27% of men and 60% of women. Link below.

The second link give different numbers...something like 23% women being assulted and 55% of men being harrassed.

It is a real problem. I put a few other links if anyone needs to contact help. I feel really stong about this issue. There is support for victims and help is available.

I have 14 years in the Army. I have heard of only a handful of sexual assault cases. I know quite a few women in the Army and not one I have known has been raped, and I know a lot more then 10.

I have heard of the 1 in 3 number, but it has really only come from one source.

I have seen a lot of cases were a female accused a male of rape when they got caught in a place where sex was not allowed. It was all concensual until they got caught. I am not saying it doesn't happen, but I have seen this more then I have seen an actual assault.

While I was stationed on a Navy ship one time, the females on the ship had formed a prostitution ring. They tried to claim rape right up until the record book was found for transactions.

To stop it, education is about the only thing you can realistically do, which is what we do in the Army. Males need to be informed of the correct things, punishments and prevention methods. For females the biggest thing is stay with a battle buddy. Even the battle buddy thing is only so good because there have been cases of female on female rape as well.

The other methods would be to completely separate males and females, which the ACLU, NOW and others would condemn. Even then you could still have female on female.

The place I have seen it the highest was in basic training, in the reception unit, before the female trainee oficially started basic training. The handful of actual assault cases I have seen was in basic training, before they get their first classes about UCMJ and their rights.

Male on male assault cases have gone up since Dont Ask Dont Tell, but these are rare and generally not talked about for a variety of reasons.
