Is there financial assistance for custody/alimony hearings?

I know nothing about this! HELP! I am trying to do some research for my brother-in-law. Does the state/government offer financial assistance to single parents for family court costs (i.e. custody/spousal support hearings)? If so, how can I get information for the assistance in my state?
