I had a child 2.5 years ago and her mother and I weren't married. Since her mother was single she had health insurance through the state of Michigan and she had that insurance during the birth of our daughter. We heard from a few different places that the state would be making me pay for around half of the birth medical expenses but I never heard anything about it. Until now.
Now, 2.5 years later, I get a bill for $2,000. Since we weren't married, her mother was never on my health insurance back then. And even if she was, I don't think I could claim this on that insurance. I'm not even that insurance companies customer anymore.
Does anyone know if there's anything I can do about this? There's a form with the letter saying I can protest it, but what exactly can I protest? Would contacting a lawyer do anything in this situation? Or am I just stuck with paying it?
Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
