Is there any wrong way to exercise, if doing it just for fun and fitness?

When I go to the gym, some of these machines intimidate me. I do not know how much I should lift, how many times I should lift it. or when to stop and move on to another machine.
I feel like just doing whatever I feel like doing when I get in front of a machine.. I don't want to have to think about "reps" and stuff like that..
Is there any harm in that?
Isn't the point just to get some activity going on?

The only thing I would think that matters is making sure your "form" is right so that you don't get injured I guess. But I don't know.
