Is there any way a regular home stereo can act as a receiver for a home theater system?

I have a Craig shelf system with a 3CD changer and an AM/FM tuner. It has two matching speakers that attach to the back with a red and black wire for each. As you can tell, I know nothing when it comes to audio systems. What I'm wondering is if I can use this stereo as a receiver and just buy the speakers rather than the entire home theater system, seeing as how the receiver is the most expensive part.

Thanks

You can not make a stereo system into a Surround sound system, they don't have the decoder to decode the Dolby surround sound or the DTS. You'll have to invest in a new receiver that has the decoder. Pioneer and Onkyo and very good receiver that don't cost you an arm and leg (from $349). Hope that this will help you out.
