Is there any possible way I can have service on my iPhone 3gs in Tahiti?

Ok, so I have an iPhone 3gs, and I recently went to Tahiti. Tahiti does not support service for US phones. I've heard of them using something called GSM service, but not completely sure what that is.. Please help, lol I went a week without being able to text or call or use Internet and it's MISERABLE!!!! Lol
