Is there any place where one could just go hike and camp where he pleases?

I love camping, but I hate camp grounds. I just want to be able to go out and hike a day, pitch camp where I please, and do it all over again the next day. I'm sure this dream would probably violate multiple laws, but I thought I would ask. FYI I live in Southern Illinois but a good camping trip is always worth a little driving.
