I ask this question merely out of curiousity as my mother has had her desktop computer now for the last 7 years and it's still going as if it were brand new. Me on the other hand bought a laptop about 4 years ago and it lasted (if I was lucky) all of 2 years. Why is that? anything that you can share is greatly appreciated, thank you so much.

Depends on the quality Of the Computer. There is no certainty. But If you handle it with care and clean the dusts from on the hard wares some a time, definitely it will effect the life of your PC. These dust holds mostures. Anyways buying a better quality Mother Board is the best thing you may do. But no mother board is best . . .advance mother board releases every month. . .every year.

laptop dnt last aslong

if you got one now it would

cuz off all the better hardware and software

and ur mum probs dnt use bitorrent and downloads loads of music/movies and addware

1)u browse the net for porn, torrents, get spyware and malware..., and ur mom just for business
2)get a good antivirus system, it ain't expensive
if well protected from viruses, it can last 4ever. i have conected my ooooold pentium1 from '97 when i busted my computer, and it worked like the day i bought it. =)

There are too many factors involved to give a reliable answer, but usually it depends upon usage

If you use you computer everyday for long periods of time, switching on/off (from mains) each time you leave it (going for lunch or whatever) - then the components within will deteriorate quicker than a computer that is use once a week for around an hour just checking on Emails & the like.
It's got something to do with 'Thermal expansion' of electronic components

It is also dependant on the components used - If you have a PC (Laptop or desktop) that has everything 'matched' to manufacturer's recommendations - then the PC should last longer than a 'custom built' pc that has any old parts fitted.

There is also the factor of quality control of parts.
Some companies in the 'older days' had tighter quality control because the electronic component on the cards/motherboard etc were a lot more expensive to purchase - so the companies had to ensure that their product will 'last', however nowadays electronic components are mass produced a lot quicker & cheaper so companies that produce the motherboards etc have 'slacken' quality control - since it's cheaper to replace the board than to repair it

Technically, no, but the moving parts can wear out....this only means fans and hard drives, plus cd drives, really. Everything else should theoretically keep on working forever....well, ages anyway... as nothing is moving and doesn't wear out

There's nothing wrong with an old system, just gets harder and harder to run current software on it.......

a pc has an average life expectancy of five years but some have have lasted ten years or more this will depend on how you use and what you use it for. if you use it for general work then it may last a long time if you use it for high end gaming then this will put a lot of stress on your hard driveand cpu. one of the most common causes of a pc failure is a hard drive failure or the cpu over heating or the battery that keeps your pc settings (CMOS) but this is easily replaced

as new software comes on the market everyday a pc we buy today is virtually obsolete tomorrow so when you buy one make sure it is the highest specification you can afford or alternatively you can upgrade the pc if required.
