Is there an easy way to tell what's a weed and what's a plant in my garden...

...without having to refer to a book? I'm a terrible gardener, but I'm trying my best.
I have a bed in my garden which I didn't plant and is overgrown like a jungle. I've been told that some of the items are plants and others are weeds, but haven't been told which is which.
I'm tempted to dig the whole lot up and just re-plant it from scratch, but that's quite wastefull, so is there an easy way to tell which are weeds and which are plants?

It depends on what type of garden you're talking about.

If it is a vegetable garden it could be very hard with smaller plants to identify. If it's a jungle by now, as you say, most likely it was taken over by weeds. If the previous owner or person who planted the bed did not plant anything before they left then most likely it is weeds. Most vegetable/fruit gardens I know you have to plant each year except asparagus and strawberries; however, those are already in full force at least here in NE USA where it is late spring.

If it is a flower garden and it is late spring where you are, most flowers are approaching their full growth, though they may not have flowered yet. If what is in your garden does not look like a flower it may be a weed.

Ask your neighbors what they think they are.

Starting over in late spring may be ok depending on what you want to plant. Definately will give you peace of mind of what you have in your garden.

A weed is simply a plant growing somewhere you don't want it to, so I would just dig or pull out any plants you don't want and feel happy that what you have done looks good irrelevant of what the plants actually are.
