First of all, idk if all my terminology will be correct here, but I'll try my best.
I want to take an mp3 file and synthesize it so that when I use my midi keyboard on my pc, when I hit the keys, it will play that mp3 file at different pitches (I think a range of 5 different octaves). I tried looking online for hours, and couldn't find anything clear. The only thing I found about making virtual instruments involved GarageBand, which I'm pretty sure is a mac only application.
When I make .mid files in programs such as finale notepad, what sound file(s) are being played and what format are they in? I tried searching "Computer" for instruments such as "piccolo" but all I got were .ins files exclusive to a single program. I hope to find a program that can create the files that the .mid files are pointing to.
I understand that midi and audio are different. But I just really want to know how to create virtual instruments the way I describe above.
