I wonder if there is a gene that indicates the possibility of addiction being hereditary. I have an alcoholic uncle, a brother who has been in prision for his drug habit and related crimes, cousins who have lost everything including their lives due to addictions. I myself have had to struggle with an opiate addiction in the past and recently my young son was admitted to a psych hospital due to a drug induced psychotic episode as he "liked the way drugs made him feel " and took too many. any thoughts on this idea ?

Yes, addiction is hereditary. There is plenty of evidence for a connection between genetic endowment and addiction to alcohol and drugs. By analyzing patterns of inheritance, researchers have learned that heredity accounts for about half of the risk that a person will develop an addiction.

So, any oRABpring would have a 50% chance of becoming an addict.

Hope this helps.
