My car (99' Saab 9-3) had been spewing coolant at the rate of 1 gallon every 5 minutes. Tracing the leak only led to the general vicinity around the water pump. On my water pump there are 4 entrances for cooling hoses. All of them were obscured by the power steering pump, so I had to remove that to get to the water pump. After that of course I couldn't run the engine to see where it was leaking from. I am going to buy all new O-rings for every hose connection, but I don't know if I should buy a new water pump while I am in there.
I took the water pump, and filled it with water- and held it up above my head. No water seeped through the gasket. But I wasn't sure if that was a meaningless test, because there was no fluid pressure.
The water pump splits into two halves. The website where I buy my parts only sells one half of it (the pulley/impeller side) and you have to install the gasket between the two parts yourself. I am a little nervous about attempting to install a gasket, I have never done that before- and I am afraid if the gasket is leaking on my current water pump, that it may leak again soon after I try to install a new gasket.
Thanks in advance for any advice
