Is there a way to tell if someone is in the Army or not?

A friend of mines 18 year old son, who dropped out of high school and ran away from home, called his parents and told them that he has joined the Army. He said that he got his GED (in about 3 weeks time) through the Army and is going to basic training at Ft. Benning GA., (he is supposedly there now) The kid is a compulsive liar so it is hard for them to believe anything he says. Is there a way to verify whether he is in the Army or not? thanks
